TODAY’S WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT · 9 OCTOBER 2026

Being generous

Matthew 10:8 — “Freely you have received; freely give.”

SERIES 8: BECOMING LIKE JESUS. 24. Being generous (Learning to give freely because everything we have comes from God).

Following Jesus means learning to become generous with what God has entrusted to us. Generosity is not simply about giving money. It is about recognising that everything we have — our time, abilities, possessions, opportunities and resources — ultimately comes from God.

It’s easy to think of what we have as belonging entirely to us. We work for it, earn it and make decisions about how to use it. But Scripture reminds us that God is the giver of every good gift. When we understand this principle, our attitude begins to change. Instead of asking, “How much can I keep for myself?” we begin to ask, “How can I use what God has given me to bless someone else?”

Jesus taught that generosity should come from the heart, not from pressure or the desire to impress others. We do not give in order to make God love us more. We give because we have already received so much from Him.

Sometimes generosity means giving financially to someone in need. Sometimes it means giving our time to someone who is lonely, sharing our abilities with someone who needs help, offering encouragement to someone who is struggling, or simply being willing to notice another person’s needs and walk with them through it.

We may sometimes feel that we do not have enough to give. But generosity is not measured only by the size of the gift. God looks at the heart behind it.

When we give freely, we begin to discover something beautiful: generosity changes us. It loosens our grip on possessions, breaks the hold of selfishness and teaches us to trust God more deeply.

Everything we have is ultimately a gift from God anyway, and when we willingly give some of it away, we become channels through which His goodness can reach others.

Words of encouragement

I never really considered writing a Blog. Then one day, a lady that came to our house group shared that she was struggling with ‘life’ and that she liked the positive perspective I had on Scripture and asked if I would consider sending her a daily text to encourage her.

This began back in 2016 and slowly things grew. She shared her text and when it all got too much asked me if I would include some of her friends and they too asked for more friends to be included. This grew organically to a point where I couldn’t just keep sending texts and so I developed an online ‘Blog.’

Since then, I’ve been asked to put up a Facebook Page for those who prefer that, plus I continue to send daily emails as well as WhatsApp messages.

My heart is in everything I write and is foundationally based around Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 4:15: “There are a lot of people around who can’t wait to tell you what you’ve done wrong, but there aren’t many fathers willing to take the time and effort to help you grow up.”

As well as 1 Thessalonians 5:11: “… speak encouraging words to one another. Build up hope so you’ll all be together in this, no one left out, no one left behind.”
