(Matthew 10:8) “Freely you have received; freely give.”
SERIES 8: BECOMING LIKE JESUS. 24. Being generous (Learning to give freely because everything we have comes from God).
Following Jesus means learning to become generous with what God has entrusted to us. Generosity is not simply about giving money. It is about recognising that everything we have — our time, abilities, possessions, opportunities and resources — ultimately comes from God.
It’s easy to think of what we have as belonging entirely to us. We work for it, earn it and make decisions about how to use it. But Scripture reminds us that God is the giver of every good gift. When we understand this principle, our attitude begins to change. Instead of asking, “How much can I keep for myself?” we begin to ask, “How can I use what God has given me to bless someone else?”
Jesus taught that generosity should come from the heart, not from pressure or the desire to impress others. We do not give in order to make God love us more. We give because we have already received so much from Him.
Sometimes generosity means giving financially to someone in need. Sometimes it means giving our time to someone who is lonely, sharing our abilities with someone who needs help, offering encouragement to someone who is struggling, or simply being willing to notice another person’s needs and walk with them through it.
We may sometimes feel that we do not have enough to give. But generosity is not measured only by the size of the gift. God looks at the heart behind it.
When we give freely, we begin to discover something beautiful: generosity changes us. It loosens our grip on possessions, breaks the hold of selfishness and teaches us to trust God more deeply.
Everything we have is ultimately a gift from God anyway, and when we willingly give some of it away, we become channels through which His goodness can reach others.
