Following Jesus means learning to stand firm when temptation offers us an easier path.
Following Jesus means learning to trust God even when we can’t see what lies ahead. Having Faith in God doesn’t mean that we understand everything – or that we know how every situation will turn out – it simply means rejecting the fear that comes against us and deliberately choosing to trust the One who does.
Following Jesus does not mean that life will always make sense. Faith is easy to talk about when everything is going well. The real test comes when life hurts. There will be times when we pray and the answer doesn’t seem to come. When something we hoped for is taken away. When we face illness, disappointment, loss or circumstances we simply cannot understand.
Following Jesus means learning to be thankful for what God has already given us – rather than constantly wishing for what we do not have.
Following Jesus means learning that not every desire needs to be satisfied, not every thought needs to be spoken, and not every impulse needs to be acted upon.
Following Jesus means learning to notice the people around us and choosing to make their lives a little better whenever we can. Kindness can seem like a small thing, but in the hands of God, small things can have a much greater impact than we realise.
Following Jesus means learning to wait without allowing waiting to turn into frustration, disappointment, or worse – bitterness. Patience is not simply putting up with delays. It is learning to trust God even when His timing does not match our own.
Following Jesus means learning to live with integrity. That means being the same person when people are watching and when nobody is watching. Integrity is about more than avoiding obvious wrongdoing. It is about allowing our private lives to match the person we appear to be in public.
Following Jesus means learning to recognise the power of our words. We may think that what we say is only a few sounds that disappear into the air, but words can stay with people for years. A kind word can lift someone who is struggling. An encouraging word can give someone courage to keep going, – but careless, angry or cruel words can wound deeply – sometimes long after we have forgotten that we ever said them.
Following Jesus means learning to see people differently. The world often teaches us to judge people by what they look like, what they have achieved, how they behave, or what they can do for us. Jesus looks deeper. He sees the person behind the failure, the pain behind the behaviour, and the need behind the words.
