(Isaiah 40:31) “But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.”

SERIES 8: BECOMING LIKE JESUS. 10. Growing in patience (Learning to wait without becoming bitter).

Following Jesus means learning to wait without allowing waiting to turn into frustration, disappointment, or worse – bitterness. Patience is not simply putting up with delays. It is learning to trust God even when His timing does not match our own.

We live in a world that teaches us to expect immediate answers. We can send a message and expect a reply within seconds. We can order something today and have it delivered tomorrow. But God rarely works according to our timetable. Sometimes He asks us to wait because something is not yet ready. Sometimes He is preparing us while we are waiting. And sometimes we may never fully understand why He has chosen to make us wait.

The thing is… waiting always exposes what is inside us. Waiting can push us into becoming impatient with God, frustrated with other people, or discouraged by the circumstances we cannot change. We may even begin to debt God’s goodness and think that He has forgotten us simply because He has not answered when we expected Him to.

But patience grows when we choose to trust that He knows best – instead of resentment.

James tells us that the testing of our faith produces perseverance, and perseverance helps us mature. Patience is therefore not wasted time. God uses the waiting itself to shape our character.

Following Jesus means learning to say, “I don’t understand this, and I don’t know how long it will take, but I trust You.”

That kind of patience does not mean sitting back and doing nothing. We continue to pray, work, obey, and do what God has placed before us – but we stop demanding that everything happen according to our timetable.

When the answer seems slow, remember that God is not slow. He is faithful. Following Jesus means learning to wait with faith, enduring without bitterness, and trusting that God knows best and His timing is better than ours.
