(Ephesians 4:32) “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

SERIES 8: BECOMING LIKE JESUS. 11. Growing in kindness (Choosing to make a difference in someone else’s day).

Following Jesus means learning to notice the people around us and choosing to make their lives a little better whenever we can. Kindness can seem like a small thing, but in the hands of God, small things can have a much greater impact than we realise.

We often think of kindness as doing something big for someone. But most of the time, it is much simpler. A kind word. A smile. Taking time to listen. Offering help when someone is struggling. Sending a message to someone who may be lonely. Sometimes kindness costs us nothing more than a few minutes of our time.

The problem is that we can become so absorbed in our own lives that we stop noticing the needs of others. We have our own worries, plans, frustrations and problems. Yet Jesus constantly noticed people. He saw the person others walked past. He stopped for those others ignored. He listened to people who had been pushed aside.

Kindness begins when we learn to see people rather than simply see what is happening around us.

Paul tells us to be kind and compassionate to one another. Kindness is therefore more than simply being polite. It comes from a heart that genuinely cares about what another person is experiencing.

And kindness does not always come naturally. Sometimes the person who needs our kindness the most may be the very person who has irritated us, disappointed us, or treated us badly.

Following Jesus means choosing kindness even when we could choose indifference.

We may never know what someone else is carrying. A simple act of kindness might be the thing that reminds them that they are not alone.

So today, ask God to open your eyes to someone who needs encouragement, patience, help or simply a little kindness.

Following Jesus means learning to make a difference — not always through great things, but through small acts of love that reflect Him.
