(Philippians 4:11) “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.”
SERIES 8: BECOMING LIKE JESUS. 13. Choosing contentment (Learning to be thankful for what God has given us).
Following Jesus means learning to be thankful for what God has already given us – rather than constantly wishing for what we do not have.
Contentment does not mean that we stop having dreams, making plans or wanting to grow. It means learning to recognise that what we have today is a gift from God.
We live in a world that constantly tells us that we need more. More money. A bigger house. A better car. More possessions. More recognition. If we allow ourselves to succumb to that thought process, we will begin comparing our lives with the lives of others and feel that we are somehow missing out.
But comparison can easily robs us of gratitude, and there will always be someone who has more than we do. There will also be someone who has less. If we allow ourselves to measure our happiness by what other people possess, we will never have enough.
Paul learned this lesson. He wrote that he had learned to be content whatever his circumstances. His contentment was not based on having an easy life. It came from knowing that Christ was with him in every circumstance.
Contentment changes the way we see what we already have. Instead of taking our blessings for granted, we begin to recognise them. Our family. Our friends. Our home. Food on the table. A beautiful day. A conversation. A moment of peace. Even the simple things can become reasons to thank God.
And sometimes contentment means trusting God when life has not turned out the way we expected. We may not understand our circumstances, but we can still choose gratitude, because we know that He has something better for us.
Today, stop for a moment and think about what God has already placed in your life. Thank Him for those things. You may discover that you have been surrounded by blessings that you had simply stopped noticing.
Following Jesus means learning to say, “Thank You, Lord, for what You have given me,” and trusting Him with what comes next.

Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father open my eyes to see that what You have given me (where You have planted me) is enough. Then help me to grow and bear fruit for Your Glory – just where I am …” Amen!
