(John 14:27) “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
SERIES 9: RECEIVING FROM JESUS. 3. Receiving Peace (Learning to rest in God when circumstances are beyond our control.)
Following Jesus means learning to receive His peace, especially when life feels uncertain and circumstances are beyond our control. Yes, we live in a world filled with worry, disappointment, conflict, and unexpected difficulties – but, Jesus offers us a peace that does not depend upon everything going according to plan.
When Jesus spoke the words recorded in John 14:27, He knew His disciples would soon face fear, confusion, and sorrow. He did not promise to remove every difficulty from their lives. Instead, He promised them His peace — and that same promise is available to us today.
How often do we exhaust ourselves trying to solve problems ONLY HE CAN CHANGE? We worry about tomorrow, struggle to control the actions of others, and carry burdens that are not ours to carry and that God wants us to bring to Him!
Receiving His peace begins when we surrender our need to control everything.
In Philippians 4:6–7, Paul encourages us to bring our anxieties to God through prayer and thanksgiving. He promises that the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Notice that we may not see our circumstances immediately change – but our hearts will – and find rest in Him.
Perhaps you are waiting for an answer, worrying about someone you love, or facing an uncertain future. Jesus is not asking you to understand everything that He’s about to do – He is ONLY asking you to trust Him.
So, bring your worries to Jesus. Surrender what you cannot control and allow His peace to fill your heart.
Peace is not the absence of life’s storms – it is the assurance that we are never alone within them.
