(1 John 4:10) “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
SERIES 9: RECEIVING FROM JESUS. 3. Receiving God’s love (Allowing ourselves to be loved by God even when we feel unworthy.)
Following Jesus means learning to receive His love, even when we feel unworthy of it. There are times when we look at our failures, our weaknesses, and the mistakes of our past, and wonder how God could possibly love us. I used to believe that I must first become better, stronger, or more faithful before I could truly receive His love. But the truth of the Gospel is the very opposite.
God did not wait for us to become worthy before He loved us. He loved us first. He demonstrated that love by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us while we were still sinners. His love is not a reward for good behaviour, nor is it a prize reserved for those who have everything right. Grace … is a gift, freely offered to us through Jesus.
Receiving God’s love means allowing this truth to reach the deepest places of our hearts. It means bringing our shame, our regrets, and our sense of unworthiness into His presence, rather than hiding from Him. We do not have to pretend to be better than we are. God already knows us completely, and still He calls us to come near.
We must also learn to distinguish between conviction and condemnation. God may lovingly show us where we need to change, but He does not ask us to live under the constant weight of shame. His purpose is to restore us, transform us, and draw us closer to Himself.
Perhaps the hardest part of faith is not learning to love God, but believing that He truly loves us. Yet before we can give His love to others, we must allow ourselves to receive it. We cannot pour out what we have never allowed Him to pour in.
Today, stop trying to earn what God has already offered through Jesus. Come to Him as you are. Let His love quiet your fears, heal your wounded heart, and remind you that your worth is not measured by your past, but by the grace He has freely extended to you.
