(1 John 1:9) “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

SERIES 9: RECEIVING FROM JESUS. 2. Receiving forgiveness (Letting go of guilt and accepting the forgiveness God offers us.)

Following Jesus means learning to receive His forgiveness. Many of us know that God is merciful, yet we continually carrying the weight of past mistakes. We remember what we said, what we did, and the people we may have hurt. Even after confessing our sins, we sometimes punish ourselves by wallowing in guilt – believing we must somehow make ourselves worthy of forgiveness.

But forgiveness is not something we earn. It is a gift of God’s grace, made possible through Jesus Christ. When we honestly confess our sins, God promises to forgive us and cleanse us. He does not ask us to hide our failures or pretend we have done nothing wrong. He invites us to come into His light, acknowledge the truth, and then trust in His mercy.

There is a difference between recognising our sin and remaining trapped in condemnation. God’s conviction leads us towards repentance, restoration, and a closer walk with Him. Condemnation however, keeps dragging us backwards, telling us that our failures define us and that we can never change.

Jesus calls us to receive His forgiveness and move forward in the freedom He provides. This does not mean ignoring the consequences of our actions. Where possible, we should apologise, make amends, and learn from our mistakes. But we must not confuse taking responsibility for our actions with refusing to accept God’s forgiveness.

Once we have confessed our sins, we can leave them in His hands and trust Him for the outcome. We do not need to keep paying for what Jesus has already carried to the cross.

Learning to receive forgiveness also means believing what God says about us, rather than allowing our past to have the final word. In Christ our Redeemer, we are not beyond redemption. His mercy is greater than our failures, and His grace gives us the courage to begin again.

Today, bring your guilt honestly to Jesus. Confess what needs to be confessed, accept His forgiveness, and thank Him for the freedom He offers. You cannot change yesterday, but with His help, you can walk differently today.
