(Mark 5:19) “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
SERIES 8: BECOMING LIKE JESUS. 25. Sharing our faith (Having the courage to tell others what Jesus has done).
Following Jesus means learning not only to live differently, but also to have the courage to tell others why. Sharing our faith doesn’t mean ‘having all the answers’ or ‘being able to explain everything about Christianity.’ It simply means being willing to tell people what Jesus has done in our lives.
Fear crowds in and we make sharing our faith more complicated than it needs to be. We may think we need to be great speakers, know the Bible from beginning to end or have an answer for every difficult question – but Jesus used ordinary people to tell others of the extraordinary they had experienced.
We all have a story. Perhaps we have experienced God’s forgiveness, found peace during a difficult season, received strength when we felt weak or discovered hope when circumstances seemed hopeless. These experiences are not something we need to keep hidden.
The man Jesus delivered from the demons in Mark 5 wanted to follow Him, but Jesus told him to go home and tell his own people what the Lord had done for him. His mission began with the people who already knew him. He simply needed to tell his story.
Sharing our faith requires courage because we cannot control how people will respond. Some may be interested; others may disagree or even reject what we say. But our responsibility is not to force anyone to believe. We are simply called to faithfully share what we know and leave the results in God’s hands.
Our lives also speak. When people see patience instead of anger, forgiveness instead of bitterness, generosity instead of selfishness and hope instead of despair, they begin to ask what makes us so different.
We don’t even need to wait for the perfect opportunity. When a door opens, we can simply say, “This is what Jesus has done for me.” Our story may be simple, but God can use it to reach someone who desperately needs to hear it.
