Legalism trips Christians because it replaces Grace with rule-keeping. When people elevate rules, traditions, or rigid standards above the Gospel—focusing on what to do rather than what Christ has done—they weaken Grace’s freeing influence and transforming power.
When people emphasise outward religion—using correct ‘churchy’ words, public piety, or moral posturing—while ignoring the condition of their heart, the light of Christ is dimmed within them, and their witness dulled. All because hypocrisy tempts us to measure spiritual success by image rather than by obedience, leading to a beautifully transformed character.
When we call Jesus “Healer,” we name him the One who mends bodies, restores souls, and makes broken lives whole. His healing work is not only past miracles but a present reality that shapes how we pray, live, and hope.
When we call Jesus “Judge,” we name him the just and loving referee of our lives — the One who will set wrongs right, defend the weary, and bring what is hidden into the light. This isn’t only about a distant future; it shapes how we live today, answering our longing for justice and our need to become more like him.
When we call Jesus “Rabbi” or “Teacher,” we recognise him as the authoritative, formative instructor who opens Scripture, shapes disciples, and reveals God’s Way for Life. It isn’t merely a role; it shapes how we listen, learn, and follow.
When we call Jesus “Lord” or “King,” we name him as the one who rules over all reality — the Sovereign Lord whose authority, wisdom, and love order our lives. It isn’t merely a title; it shapes how we trust, follow, and worship him.
When we call Jesus the “Messiah” or “Christ,” we name the Anointed One sent to fulfil God’s promises — the One who brings God’s rescue, presence, and reign into the chaos of our lives.
When we call Jesus the “Son of God,” we’re touching a name that holds tenderness, strength, and deep comfort. It isn’t just a theological label; it’s a way of seeing who Jesus is for us — close, gracious, and trustworthy.
When Jesus calls himself the “Son of Man,” he uses a simple phrase that is full of meaning. First, it says, I am one of you. It stresses his true humanity — he knew hunger and weariness, grief and joy. He did not stand aloof from our struggles and pain; he entered them.
“Redeemer” isn’t just a label. A redeemer steps into the mess that’s been created and pays the cost to set someone free. In Jesus, that rescue is personal: it breaks the grip and guilt of what has wrecked you, restores your standing before God, and brings you into a loving relationship. It’s legal — you’re forgiven and justified — but it’s also profoundly relational and practical: you are welcomed, known, and given a new purpose.
