(Galatians 6:9) “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
SERIES 8: BECOMING LIKE JESUS. 29. Persevering faithfully (Continuing to follow Jesus when the journey becomes difficult).
Following Jesus means learning to persevere when the journey becomes difficult. Just look back over a year or so … Faith does not mean that life will always be easy or that we will never feel tired, discouraged or uncertain. It means choosing to trust Jesus and continue walking with Him, even when (especially when) the way ahead is hard to understand.
There will be times when prayers seem unanswered, circumstances refuse to change and the progress we hoped for never seems to come. We may wonder whether our efforts are worthwhile or whether we have the strength to continue. In those moments, we must remember that faithfulness is not measured by how quickly we reach our destination – but by our willingness to keep trusting God along the way.
Jesus never promised that following Him would be without difficulty. He called His disciples to take up their cross and follow Him. He Himself endured rejection, suffering and the cross, remaining obedient to the Father even when the cost was great. His example reminds us that perseverance is not about relying on our own strength, but about remaining close to Him.
When we feel weak, we can bring our struggles honestly to God. We do not have to pretend that everything is fine. Through prayer, Scripture and the encouragement of fellow believers, God WILL renew our strength and help us take the next step. Sometimes perseverance means moving forward boldly; at other times, it simply means refusing to give up when we feel we have little left to give.
We may not always see the fruit of our faithfulness immediately. Yet God sees every act of obedience, every quiet sacrifice and every time we decide to choose love instead of bitterness – nothing done for Him is ever wasted.
So let us keep our eyes on Jesus and continue walking with Him, one day at a time. When the road is long and our strength is failing, His grace is sufficient. We don’t need to see the whole journey ahead. We need only to trust the One who walks beside us.
