(Matthew 5:9) “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”
SERIES 7: WALKING WITH JESUS - “How do I now live because I belong to Christ?” 20. Becoming peacemakers (Followers of Christ build bridges rather than walls).
Following Jesus changes the way we respond to conflict. The world often tells us to protect our position, win the argument, or cut people off when they disagree with us. Jesus calls us to something MUCH different.
Followers of Christ build bridges rather than walls.
That doesn’t mean pretending that disagreements don’t exist, or avoiding difficult conversations. Sometimes peace requires us to speak honestly, apologise when we are wrong, forgive when we have been hurt, and take the first step towards reconciliation.
Jesus Himself is our example. He came to reconcile us to God and then calls us to carry that same spirit into our relationships with others. Paul writes, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” (Romans 12:18)
Notice those words: “as far as it depends on you.” We cannot control another person's response, but we can control our own. We can refuse to add fuel to an argument. We can listen before judging. We can choose kindness instead of retaliation.
Sometimes being a peacemaker means saying, “I was wrong.” Sometimes it means saying, “I forgive you.” Sometimes it simply means refusing to walk away when a relationship becomes difficult.
Peace is not weakness. It takes strength to lower our defences, put down our pride and reach across a divide.
Wherever you are today, ask yourself: Am I building a bridge or building a wall? Why? Because a follower of Jesus should leave people closer to peace, not further from it.
