(John 10:27) “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
SERIES 7: WALKING WITH JESUS - “How do I now live because I belong to Christ?” 7. Listening to God (Learning to recognise His voice through Scripture and the Spirit).
Following Jesus means learning not only to speak to God in prayer, but also to listen to Him. God speaks to us in dreams and visions, in prayer and most clearly through His Word. As we read through His instruction manual (Scripture), the Holy Spirit helps us understand it, applies it to our lives, exposes what needs to change, and reminds us of what is true.
The above Scripture tells us, “My sheep listen to my voice... Listening to God is not about chasing mysterious signs, searching for hidden messages, or wondering whether every thought that enters our minds is from Him. God has already spoken, and His Word gives us the foundation we need to recognise His voice.
The important distinction is that Scripture is the standard by which everything else is tested. The Holy Spirit will never lead us in a way that contradicts the Word He inspired. If an impression, desire, or supposed message conflicts with Scripture, we don't need to wrestle with it. We already know the answer.
Sometimes God speaks through a verse we've read many times, yet suddenly it seems to 'light up' and addresses exactly what we are facing. Sometimes Scripture corrects us when we'd rather be comfortable. Sometimes it gives us courage when we're afraid, wisdom when we're confused, or hope when circumstances seem impossible. The Spirit takes God's truth and brings it alive in our hearts.
Listening also requires patience. We live in a world filled with noise, opinions, distractions, and competing voices. Learning to hear God requires us to slow down and give His Word our attention.
When you want to know what God is saying, start with what He has already said.
Read His Word slowly. Pay attention. Ask what it reveals about God, what it exposes in you, what it calls you to believe, and what it asks you to do. Then obey what you understand.
Because listening to God isn't simply about hearing His voice.
It's about hearing—and following.
