(Psalm 27:14) “Wait for the Lord. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the Lord.”
SERIES 7: WALKING WITH JESUS - “How do I now live because I belong to Christ?” 8. Trusting God's Timing (Waiting faithfully instead of forcing your own plans).
Following Jesus means learning that God's timing is not always our timing.
We often know what we want—and sometimes we even believe we know when it should happen. We pray, make our plans, look for opportunities and then wonder why God doesn't seem to be moving.
Waiting can be frustrating. We want answers now. We want the door to open now. We want the situation to change now.
But sometimes God says, “Wait.” And waiting doesn't necessarily mean doing nothing. It means continuing to trust God while we do what He has already given us to do.
Think about Abraham. God promised him a son, but Abraham had to wait years before that promise was fulfilled. Joseph received dreams about his future, yet spent years in slavery and prison before he saw God's purpose unfolding. David was anointed to be king, but then had to wait while Saul remained on the throne.
God was not doing nothing during those waiting periods. He was preparing them.
Sometimes we become so focused on when God will answer that we miss what He is doing in us while we wait.
Waiting can teach us patience. It can expose our impatience. It can reveal how much we depend upon our own ability to control circumstances. Most importantly, it can teach us to trust God's wisdom rather than our own understanding.
There is also a danger in trying to force God's timing. We can open doors God hasn't opened. We can make decisions out of impatience. We can take matters into our own hands because we are afraid that if we don't act now, we will miss our opportunity.
But faith doesn't mean making God hurry. Faith means trusting Him enough to wait.
That doesn't mean every delay is God's direct instruction to stop. Sometimes we need to act courageously. Sometimes we need to take the opportunity in front of us. But when we have prayed, sought God's wisdom and still don't have clarity, we don't need to manufacture an answer simply because waiting makes us uncomfortable.
God is not late. He sees what we cannot see. He knows what we do not know. He understands what is coming long before we do.
So if you're waiting for something today—a direction, an answer, a relationship, a change in circumstances, an opportunity—don't assume that nothing is happening simply because you cannot see it. Keep praying. Keep obeying. Keep preparing. Keep trusting. And then when God opens the door, walk through it.
The goal isn't simply to get what we are waiting for. The goal is to become the person God is shaping us to be while we wait.
Sometimes the greatest work God does is not changing our circumstances. It is changing us.
