(Luke 9:23) “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”
SERIES 7: WALKING WITH JESUS - “How do I now live because I belong to Christ?” 3. Daily Surrender (Giving Christ first place every single day).
Giving Christ first place every single day.
Following Jesus is not a one-time decision that settles everything for the rest of our lives. It is a daily choice to put Him first.
Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)
Notice the word daily.
Every morning, we have another opportunity to decide who will direct our lives. Will I put my own plans, desires and ambitions first, or will I surrender them to Christ?
Surrender can sound like giving something up. But Biblical surrender is really about giving something over to the One who knows us better than we know ourselves.
It means saying:
- “Jesus, this is Your day, not mine.”
- “Your will matters more than my plans.”
- “Your ways matter more than what I want.”
- “Use me however You choose.”
That doesn't mean we stop making plans, working hard, enjoying life or using the abilities God has given us. It means we stop insisting that everything must go according to our plans.
- Sometimes God will lead us somewhere we didn't expect.
- Sometimes He will ask us to forgive when we would rather hold on to resentment.
- Sometimes He will ask us to wait when we want an answer immediately.
- Sometimes He will close a door we desperately wanted to walk through.
Daily surrender means trusting Him even then.
Paul described it this way: “Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” (Romans 12:1)
A living sacrifice is different from a dead one. It has to be placed on the altar again and again.
That is why surrender isn't something we do once and then forget. Each day brings new decisions, new temptations and new opportunities to put Christ first.
And the remarkable thing is that when we surrender our lives to Jesus, we don't lose our lives—we discover what they were meant for.
Daily surrender means this: I begin each day by giving Christ first place, trusting His will above my own and allowing Him to lead me one step at a time.
