(Mark 10:42) “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve…”

Part 6: WHAT’S IN IT FOR US? - 22. Humble leadership (servanthood attracts respect, not domination).

We've all been there: school, work, even church. Leadership that bosses people around might win short‑term compliance, but true humble leadership wins hearts.

When Jesus leads, he serves - washing feet, carrying burdens, speaking truth with love. Following his example and inviting the Holy Spirit to shape your character means leading from a place of dependence on God, not from ego. That changes how people respond: respect, trust, and willingness to follow.

How to live it (practical steps)

  1. Model, don’t demand: Do the small, unseen tasks your team needs. Let service set the tone.
  2. Listen first: Ask questions, hear people’s stories, and let the Holy Spirit teach you what’s really needed.
  3. Give away credit: Point praise to others and to Jesus; people will follow someone who builds them up.
  4. Lead by sacrifice: Make decisions that prioritise the good of the group over personal preference or status.
  5. Teach, don’t boss: Equip others with skills and space to grow - multiply leaders, don’t hoard control.
  6. Hold people gently: Correct with compassion and truth; restore with grace as Jesus does.
  7. Pray for wisdom: Regularly ask God (and the Holy Spirit) for humility, discernment, and courage to do what’s right, not what’s easy.

Guardrails

  • Don’t confuse humility with passivity: serving well sometimes means setting boundaries and making hard calls.
  • Avoid performative service—ask: “Am I doing this to be seen or to serve Jesus and others?”
  • Beware pride in humility itself: the test is who you point to when things go well.

Try this week: Choose one leadership situation (group, class rep, team captain). Do one visible act of service for that group, listen to two people you wouldn’t normally ask, and thank God for what you learn. Make humility your leadership default and watch respect grow.

Let us pray, "Heavenly Father, I need a humble heart, Lord. I know that I dismiss people that You have died to save far too easily. Forgive me. Help me, Holy Spirit, to listen before I act, or judge, or move." Amen!
