(Proverbs 4:23) “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”
Part 6: WHAT’S IN IT FOR US? - 18. Better boundaries (love shaped by wisdom knows when to say no and when to say yes).
Boundaries aren’t cold walls - they’re loving limits that protect your heart, your time, and your calling. Saying no is not selfish; it’s stewardship. Jesus modelled clear priorities. The Holy Spirit gives the wisdom to see what strengthens your soul and what drains it, and God honours limits offered in humility rather than pride. Why this matters for you:
- Keep your calling intact: Healthy limits let you stay present for the people and tasks God actually gave you - not every urgent demand.
- Avoid burnout: Saying no prevents resentment and exhaustion so you can love like Jesus - steady, patient, and present.
- Live winsomely: Boundaries model mature, Christlike love instead of people‑pleasing or passive avoidance.
- Choose freedom: Limits create space to say a wholehearted “yes” to what God is asking of you.
How to live it (practical steps)
- Pause and pray. Before you answer - breathe, ask Jesus, “Will this honour God, others, and me?” 'ASK' the Holy Spirit to clarify.
- Name your compass and your fence. Compass = what points you toward Jesus (prayer, study, friendship). Fence = what keeps you safe (toxic situations, overload, late‑night scrolling). Say both aloud.
- Have a short script. “I can’t right now; but can I help in another way?” Calm, brief, kind.
- Protect one non‑negotiable. Guard one weekly rhythm (an hour of prayer, Sabbath rest, study block) and let it shape other choices.
- Soft no, clear yes. Decline with an alternative when possible: a delayed yes, a smaller task, or prayer support.
- Bring others in. Share your boundaries with a Christian friend or mentor and ask them to check in.
Guardrails
- Don’t use boundaries as an escape or an excuse for pride - they must be rooted in love and service to God.
- If guilt keeps showing up, bring it to Jesus and the Holy Spirit; honest confession often opens healing.
Try this week: Pick one recurring request that drains you. Pray two minutes, use your script to say no once, offer one small alternative, then journal how it felt. Thank Jesus for the margin it creates.

Let us pray, "Heavenly Father, help me to distinguish what YOU want me to do from what I FEEL is right! Help me to see myself as a follower of Jesus and not as an equal..." Amen!
