(Matthew 10:37) [Jesus speaking] "whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me" (prioritising over Christ)
Part 4: RECURRING TACTICS THE TEMPTER USES — 5. Misuse of affections (Any love that replaces God or leads you to oppose Jesus is misplaced)
Misuse of affections is another stealthy snare: it takes what God gave to show His love (romance, friendship, family, nation) and lifts the gift onto the throne.
When your heart gives final authority to a person, a friendship circle, or a flag, that affection becomes a rival loyalty, quietly pushing out the One who made you to worship the One True God.
Please hear me: all these loves are good—they are God’s gifts. But gifts become gods when we expect from them what only God can give.
- Romantic desire becomes idolatry when you use it to fill your deepest needs.
- Friendship becomes an idol when their approval decides your worth.
- Patriotism becomes a rival when national pride outweighs obedience to Jesus.
The pattern is always the same: you excuse compromise for the sake of “love,” you silence your conscience in order to belong, you trade spiritual habits for the safety of reputation—and slowly, but surely, you wither inside.
So what do we do? Name it. Confess the affection you’ve crowned. Bring it into the light. Return it to its proper place under Christ. Love deeply—but don’t make anyone or anything your ultimate source of meaning. Let marriage, family, friendship, and country be ordered by allegiance to Jesus, not the other way around. Choose humble dependence over demanding satisfaction. Offer your ‘loves' to God as worship; ask Him to cleanse and redirect them so they serve others and point to Christ.
When affections are rightly ordered, they become a force for holiness, courage, and faithful witness—love that blesses, not binds. Come out from rival loyalties; be holy in your loves. Give your heart to the Lover of your soul, and watch every other love fall into its true, freeing place. Maranatha. ![]()
