(Proverbs 12:1) “Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.”
SERIES 9: RECEIVING FROM JESUS. 14. Receiving Correction (Allowing God [and others] to show us where we need to grow.)
Following Jesus means learning to receive correction with humility – rather than responding with pride, defensiveness or resentment. None of us has reached perfection, and we all have areas in which we need to grow. God, in His love, helps us recognise these areas so that we can become more like Jesus.
Correction is not always comfortable. When someone points out our mistakes, challenges our attitudes or questions our decisions, our first reaction may be to defend ourselves. We may feel misunderstood or believe that admitting we are wrong will make us appear weak. Yet refusing to listen can prevent us from learning valuable lessons and developing the character God desires for us.
Throughout Scripture, we see the importance of being willing to learn. King David accepted Nathan’s rebuke when his wrongdoing was exposed. Peter was corrected by Jesus when his understanding of God’s purposes was mistaken. These examples remind us that even those who love God deeply need correction from time to time.
Not every criticism is fair or helpful, however, and we need wisdom to distinguish between loving, truthful correction or from words intended to hurt or control us. We should therefore bring what we hear before God, examine our hearts honestly and ask the Holy Spirit to show us what we need to learn.
Receiving correction does not mean believing that we are worthless or that everything others say about us is true. It means being teachable enough to acknowledge our mistakes, make changes and grow in wisdom. God corrects us not to destroy us, but to lead us towards maturity and a life that reflects His character.

Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father, help me Lord, to receive correction, to see that it’s from You and not to reject it by judging the messenger.” Amen!
