(1 Thessalonians 5:11) “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

SERIES 9: RECEIVING FROM JESUS. 13. Receiving Encouragement (Being willing to accept encouragement rather than always trying to be strong.)

Following Jesus means learning to receive encouragement as well as giving it to others. We may be willing to support those who are struggling, offer words of comfort and remind others of God’s faithfulness. Yet when we face difficulties ourselves, somehow, we can find it much harder to accept the same kindness from others.

Sometimes we feel that we must always be strong. We hide our worries, keep our disappointments to ourselves and tell everyone that we are fine, even when we are tired or discouraged. We may even believe that admitting our struggles is a sign of weakness. But God never intended us to carry burdens alone.

Throughout Scripture, we see how God uses people to strengthen one another. A timely word, a listening ear or a simple reminder of God’s promises can help us keep going when our own faith feels weak. Encouragement doesn’t always remove our difficulties, but it certainly reminds us that we are not facing them alone.

The problem is that receiving encouragement requires humility. It means being honest about how we feel, allowing others to care for us and resisting the urge to dismiss their kindness. We do not need to have all the answers or appear strong every day. There are times when we need someone else to remind us of truths we already know – but have temporarily lost sight of.

Jesus invites us to bring our burdens to Him. He also places people in our lives who can offer comfort, wisdom and reassurance. Accepting their help is not a failure of faith; it can be one of the ways God answers our prayers.

Today, allow yourself to receive encouragement without feeling that you must immediately repay it or prove your strength. Listen when someone offers a kind word. Share your concerns with someone you trust, and let others stand beside you.

Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father, help me to forgive myself and receive encouragement from You through all You send me…” Amen!
