(Matthew 6:11) “Give us this day our daily bread.”
SERIES 9: RECEIVING FROM JESUS. 10. Receiving God’s Provision (Trusting God to provide what we genuinely need.)
Following Jesus means learning to trust God to provide what we genuinely need, rather than allowing fear, anxiety or the desire for more to govern our lives.
Jesus taught us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). Notice that He directs us to ask for what we need today. He also told us that we are not told to live in constant worry about tomorrow, nor are we encouraged to spend our lives pursuing wealth, possessions or security as though everything depends upon us. Instead, we are invited to depend upon our heavenly Father, who knows our needs before we even ask Him (Matthew 6:8).
This does not mean that we should become passive or expect God to provide everything without any effort on our part. We still have responsibilities to fulfil, work to do and wise decisions to make. But we can carry out these responsibilities without believing that the entire burden rests upon our shoulders. We should therefore work faithfully, use what God has given us wisely, and trust Him with what lies beyond our control.
Sometimes God provides through unexpected opportunities, the kindness of other people or a change in our circumstances. At other times, His provision comes through the strength to endure a difficult season, the wisdom to make a decision or the peace to continue when the way ahead is uncertain. His provision doesn’t always look like we imagined, but we can learn to recognise His care in ways we might otherwise overlook.
Paul wrote that he had learned to be content in every circumstance, whether he had plenty or was in need (Philippians 4:11–13). His confidence rested not in the amount he possessed, but in Christ, who strengthened him.
As we receive from Jesus, we learn that our security is not found in having everything we want, but in trusting the One who knows what we need. We can bring our concerns to Him, remain grateful for what we have, and share with others when we are able.
Today, ask yourself: Am I trusting God to provide what I genuinely need, or am I allowing worry about what I lack to rob me of peace? Bring your needs honestly before Him, do what is yours to do, and trust Him with the rest.

Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father, You know exactly what I need this day… I come before you with open hands in joy and love – and faithful expectation. “ Amen!
