(1 Corinthians 10:13) “God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
SERIES 8: BECOMING LIKE JESUS. 16. Standing firm in temptation (Choosing obedience when compromise seems easier).
Following Jesus means learning to stand firm when temptation offers us an easier path.
Temptation rarely arrives looking dangerous. More often, it appears reasonable. It whispers that one small compromise will not matter, that nobody will know, or worse – that we deserve what we are being offered! But every choice shapes us.
Standing firm does not mean that we will never be tempted. Jesus Himself was tempted. It just means learning to recognise temptation for what it is – and choosing obedience to the Holy Spirit, even when obedience costs us something.
There will be moments when doing what is right feels inconvenient, uncomfortable or even painful. We may have to walk away from a conversation, refuse an opportunity, admit the truth when a lie would protect us, or say no when everyone around us is saying yes.
In those moments, we do not stand alone. God promises that He will provide a way through temptation. Sometimes that way is simply walking away. Sometimes it means asking someone we trust for help. Sometimes it means turning off the screen, closing the door, changing the conversation or removing ourselves from the situation. Whatever form it takes, God gives us the strength to choose differently.
The goal is not merely to avoid doing something wrong. It is to become more like Jesus — someone whose obedience is stronger than the desire for temporary comfort or pleasure.
When temptation comes, we should pause, pray and remember who we belong to.
Standing firm means saying, “This may be easier, but it is not the way I want to live. I choose obedience.”
