(Galatians 6:9) “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
SERIES 8: BECOMING LIKE JESUS. 17. Dealing with discouragement (Learning not to give up when life becomes difficult).
Following Jesus does not mean that we will never become discouraged. There will be seasons when life feels harder than we expected, when prayers seem unanswered, progress seems slow and the future feels uncertain, and in those times, even the faithful can become weary.
Discouragement often comes when we have been trying to do the right thing for a long time but cannot yet see the results. We may wonder whether our prayers are making any difference, whether our efforts matter or (worse) whether we should simply stop trying.
But God does not measure our faithfulness only by what we can see.
Sometimes the most important thing we can do is simply keep going. Keep praying. Keep trusting. Keep doing what is right. Keep loving the people God has placed around us. Keep believing that He is working even when we cannot see the evidence.
Jesus understands what it means to feel weary. He understands rejection, disappointment, loneliness and suffering. Yet He continued to walk faithfully towards the purpose His Father had given Him.
When we become discouraged, we do not need to pretend that everything is fine. We can bring our disappointment honestly to God. We should tell Him when we are tired, confused or afraid. He does not turn away from us because our faith feels weak.
Sometimes God strengthens us through His Word. Sometimes through prayer. Sometimes through another person who encourages us at exactly the right moment. And sometimes He simply gives us enough strength for today.
We may not see the harvest yet, but that does not mean nothing is growing.
Dealing with discouragement means learning to say, “I may be tired, and I may not understand what God is doing, but I will not give up. I will keep walking with Him.”

Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father only You know my heart. Lord, You know the times when I feel discouraged – empty. Please fill me with Your Presence so that I can bring You glory in this situation …” Amen!
