Part 4: RECURRING TACTICS THE TEMPTER USES 14. Delaying Repentance (Persuade them “Not yet,” so sin remains unconfessed)
The lie is gentle, even plausible: “Not now. Later, when things settle. You’ve earned this. You’ll make it right soon.” It sounds wise, provident, but it’s simply procrastination dressed in piety. Each “not yet” is a small consent to tear away your heart from God's.
How it works: conviction knocks, and we tell it to wait. We bargain ("I’ll repent after this season"), rationalise (“It’s not that bad”), or hide behind busyness and service so we never stand naked before God’s light. What begins as postponement becomes habit.
Shame hides; secrecy deepens; what could have been healed now takes root. Spiritual life doesn’t always end in a single crash; it slowly weakens when we keep putting off coming back!
Signs you’re capitulating: you excuse wrongdoing because of circumstances; you plan vague future repentance without a date; you lean on good deeds as cover; you feel uneasy but avoid the altar of confession. This is not humility; it’s fear masquerading as wise restraint.
A call to the heart: repentance is an immediate mercy, not a task on tomorrow’s to-do list. When the Spirit convicts, answer quickly - as my wife used to say to the children, “delayed obedience is still disobedience!"
Confession is not humiliation to be deferred; it is the door back to wholeness. Say sorry plainly. Receive grace without bargaining. Let forgiveness realign your steps today. Practical next moves:
- Name it now: speak the sin aloud to God (and where appropriate, to a trusted brother or sister).
- Keep the timing specific: don’t say “sometime,” pick today, find a quiet place and go pray!
- Replace delay with accountability: invite a friend to check in and pray with you.
- Remember Grace’s immediacy: Christ meets the penitent the moment they turn.
