(Mark 7:6) And he [Jesus]said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, ‘This people honours me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’
Part 4: RECURRING TACTICS THE TEMPTER USES 13. Misusing worship and ritual (Reducing worship to formality or to performance for others’ approval).
Worship can grow familiar the way ritual does: a rhythm of words, gestures and songs repeated until they slide into automatic motion. Have you ever stood in a service and realised you were moving through the motions: lip service, checked-off prayers, a smile pre-tuned in for the camera, while your heart wandered off elsewhere?
It begins with good things: pattern, tradition, reverence. But the tempter can bend them into a stage set, turning sacred acts into habits that impress people rather than helping you meet with God.
The danger is subtle. Ritual becomes armour for pride or a mask for insecurity. We start to evaluate worship by applause, by who’s watching, or by how devout we appear. The inward transformation the liturgy intends is replaced by outward proof. This is wrong! Worship is not a performance; it is an offering… God desires truth from the heart more than flawless formality.
Recognise the Pull: Notice when you perform to be seen: when worship shapes your image more than your soul. Name the longing for approval that mimics devotion.
Reclaim Intention: Before you sing, pray, or bow, pause and name why you are doing it. Let intention turn routine back into a living encounter.
Worship as Offering, Not Exhibition: Offer your words and actions to God, not to onlookers. Ask, “Who am I trying to impress?” and then reorient toward God alone.
Practice Small Authenticities: Choose one act, an unhurried prayer, a moment of silence, a confession, done quietly and honestly. Let authenticity replace spectacle.
Invite Vulnerability in Community: If you’re a leader, then create spaces where people can worship without performance: raw prayers, simple songs, truthful testimonies. Celebrate sincerity over polish.
Restore Communion: Remember that in Christianity, ritual points to relationship. Use liturgy to open your heart, not to hide it. Let the sacraments, songs and prayers draw you into God’s presence, and into love for one another.
When worship is freed from the need to perform, it becomes what it was always meant to be: a vulnerable, honest turning toward God and a mirror that convicts and heals rather than flatters.

Let us pray, "Heavenly Father, I’m writing this and am under conviction myself!!!” Holy Spirit, flow in (and through) me. I know that I honestly haven't got a hope of following Jesus without Your help! Amen!
