(1 Corinthians 1:21) "… God in his wisdom took delight in using what the world considered stupid— preaching, of all things!—to bring those who trust him into the way of salvation."

Part 3: WE MAY LET GO... BUT GOD NEVER WILL — 11. Repentance and humility (turning from pride)

When I first came to Christ and heard my very first preacher, I admit my first thoughts were far from kind. Old habits and long‑standing assumptions rose up in me: I measured him by his appearance, critiqued his mannerisms, judged his communicative skills and his ability to hold an audience. I was looking through the jaundiced lens of thirty‑plus years of life, all the disappointments, resentments and petty standards I'd accumulated — and I thought I knew better.

But the Lord’s presence was on that man in a way I could not explain away. As he opened his heart and spoke, something deeper than argument touched me. It felt as if God’s light cut through the defensive shadows I’d wrapped myself in and exposed the smallness inside me: my judgmental pride, my bitterness, and the ugly pockets of shame I’d carried for years. The exposure was humiliating and painful, and for a time I felt utterly hopeless, as if there were no way back from that honest reckoning.

Then a gentler truth began to dawn: the light was not there to gloat over my failures or to heap condemnation on me. It was a shepherd’s light, reaching into the lost corners of a stubborn heart to find and gather in a wandering child. The preacher’s words — imperfect, human, but steeped in grace, became the instrument of God’s kindness. They guided me from where I was, not by shaming me, but by showing me a road home to my Heavenly Father. In that moment, I understood mercy: not as cheap sympathy, but as the patient, redeeming love that sees our faults and nevertheless summons us toward healing.

Let's pray. "Heavenly Father, help us all to see past the flaws in those we meet in Christ and to open our hearts and focus on and receive the light they are carrying." Amen!
