SERIES 7: WALKING WITH JESUS - “How do I now live because I belong to Christ?” 29. Keeping your eyes on Jesus (He is both the destination and the daily companion).
Following Jesus isn't a glib statement. It's a living, walking, wonderful journey that highlights our natural fleshly desires which will always try to distract us along the way.
Sometimes it sound or feels like success. Sometimes it is failure. Sometimes it is the opinions of other people, the pressures of life, or simply the busyness of each day.
In fact, we can become so occupied with what is happening around us that we lose sight of the One we are following.
That is why Scripture tells us to fix our eyes on Jesus.
Jesus is not simply the One who began our journey of faith. He is where the journey is leading us, and He is the One who walks with us along the way.
When the road is difficult, look to Jesus.
When you are discouraged, look to Jesus.
When you are tempted to compare yourself with others, look to Jesus.
When you cannot see what lies ahead, look to Jesus.
Our faith becomes unstable when we allow our circumstances to become the focus of our attention. Circumstances change. People change. Even our emotions change. But Jesus does not.
Keeping our eyes on Jesus does not mean ignoring the realities of life. It means seeing those realities in the light of who He is.
He is our example when we need to know how to live. He is our strength when we feel weak. He is our hope when the future seems uncertain. He is our comfort when we hurt. And He is our destination when this earthly journey is finally complete.
The Christian life is not simply about getting to Jesus one day. It is about walking with Jesus today.
So keep looking to Him. Not merely when you need something. Not merely when life becomes difficult. Look to Him every day.
The more clearly we see Jesus, the less we are controlled by the things competing for our attention.
He is both the destination and the daily companion.
Keep your eyes on Him, and keep walking.
