SERIES 7: WALKING WITH JESUS - “How do I now live because I belong to Christ?” 25. Persevering faithfully (Keep walking, even when the road becomes difficult).
Following Jesus is not always an easy road. There will be times when the way ahead seems clear, and other times when every step feels difficult. There may be disappointments, unanswered prayers, opposition, weariness and seasons when we wonder how much longer we can keep going.
But faithfulness is not measured by how easy the journey is. It is measured by whether we continue to walk with Jesus when it becomes difficult.
Sometimes we want to see the destination before we take the next step, but God often asks us simply to trust Him with the step that is in front of us.
Perseverance does not mean that we never become tired. It does not mean that we never struggle or question. It means that, even when we are tired, we refuse to turn away from Christ.
There may be seasons when progress seems painfully slow. You may look at your life and wonder whether anything is really changing. But God is not limited to what you can see. He is working (for us) even when the results are not yet visible.
Think of a tree in winter. From the outside, it may appear dormant and lifeless. Yet beneath the surface, unseen growth is taking place. In the same way, God may be doing a work in you that you cannot yet see.
Jesus calls us to remain faithful, not merely when we feel inspired, but also when obedience is difficult.
Keep praying when the answer seems delayed.
Keep trusting when you cannot see the way forward.
Keep obeying when no one else notices.
Keep walking when the road becomes difficult.
And remember, you are not persevering in your own strength. God gives strength to the weary and renews those who wait upon Him. (Isaiah 40:29–31)
So don't give up. Keep walking. Keep trusting. Keep going.
One day, you will look back and realise that the God who called you to take the first step was faithful to walk with you all the way.
