(Colossians 3:23) “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
SERIES 7: WALKING WITH JESUS - “How do I now live because I belong to Christ?” 16. Serving without recognition (Faithfulness matters more than applause).
Following Jesus means learning to serve even when nobody notices.
We naturally like recognition. We want people to appreciate what we do, to thank us, and to know that our contribution mattered. There is nothing wrong with encouragement, but Jesus teaches us that our service should not depend upon receiving it. He warned His followers not to practise their righteousness simply so that other people would notice them, and that our Father sees what is done in secret. (Matthew 6:1–4)
Some of the most important things we do for God may never be seen by anyone else. A quiet act of kindness. A prayer offered for someone who will never know about it. Helping someone when there is nothing to gain. Remaining faithful when nobody is watching. That totally changes the reason we serve.
We don't serve so that people will applaud us. We serve because we belong to Christ.
Jesus Himself demonstrated this kind of humility. He did not seek human praise or recognition. He came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life for others. (Mark 10:45)
Sometimes you may feel that your efforts are unnoticed. You may wonder whether anyone appreciates what you do, or whether your faithfulness makes any difference.
It does.
God sees what other people don't see. He knows the motives behind our actions, the sacrifices nobody else knows about, and the times we choose faithfulness when taking the easier path would have been far more comfortable.
So don't measure your service by the amount of applause it receives. Measure it by your faithfulness to Christ.
Serve faithfully, even when nobody notices. God does.
