SERIES 7: WALKING WITH JESUS - “How do I now live because I belong to Christ?” 11. Growing in humility (True greatness is found in serving others).
Following Jesus means learning that God's definition of greatness is very different from ours.
The world tells us that greatness comes from being noticed, admired, successful or powerful. We are encouraged to climb higher, achieve more and make sure others recognise what we have accomplished.
But Jesus turned that idea upside down when He said, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” (Matthew 20:26)
Jesus Himself demonstrated what He taught. Although He was Lord of all, He didn't demand to be served. He served others. He welcomed the overlooked, listened to those others ignored and ultimately gave His life for us.
NB - Humility doesn't mean thinking that we have no value. It means understanding that we don't need to prove our value by being above everyone else.
A humble person can recognise their gifts without boasting about them. They can accept correction without becoming defensive. They can celebrate someone else's success without feeling threatened by it. And they can serve others without needing recognition.
That can be difficult. We all like to be appreciated. But humility asks a deeper question: “Would I still do this if nobody noticed?”
Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be first must be your slave.” (Matthew 20:27) Serving others is not beneath us. It is the way of Christ. Sometimes that service is obvious. At other times, it is something nobody sees—a quiet act of kindness, helping someone who is struggling, listening when we would rather speak, or putting someone else's needs before our own.
So ask yourself today: Who can I serve? Who needs encouragement? Whose burden can I help carry?
True greatness isn't found in standing above others. It is found in kneeling down to serve them.
And when we do that, we are following the example of Jesus.
