(John 14:27) Jesus gives a peace unlike the world’s; it steadies us when control slips.
Part 6: WHAT’S IN IT FOR US? - 5. Peace inside (giving up control brings inner calm that money can’t buy).
Control feels safe until it becomes a prison. We clutch at schedules, try to anticipate worst-case scenarios, and treat other people’s choices like a life raft, only to find ourselves exhausted and anxious when the tide turns. Letting go isn’t passive resignation; it’s the brave act of surrendering the illusion that we are god and can somehow manufacture every outcome!
Giving up control begins with a small, honest admission: 'I am not my own god'. Say that to God and watch the pressure begin to ease. Prayer isn’t a to‑do list; it’s a handing‑over. When you name your fears and then release the reins - “Lord, this is yours, please forgive me for carrying it” - you trade frantic management for restful trust.
Practically, surrender shows up in concrete, freeing habits. Stop rehearsing worst‑case scenarios; set time limits on worry (two minutes, then prayer). Delegate responsibilities you don’t need to carry.
Keep a simple rule: decide, do the next right thing, then let God steward the rest. Practice gratitude for what is rather than strategising every possibility for what might be.
Boundaries matter here too: Letting go of control is not abdicating responsibility. You still act faithfully; you simply refuse to be crushed by outcomes beyond your hands. That clarity preserves your energy and keeps your heart soft instead of hardened by anxiety.
Let God's Peace reshape your relationships and work: When you’re not driving every conversation, people around you breathe and contribute. When you stop micromanaging every outcome, creativity and trust grow. You become the kind of person others can lean on without feeling squeezed.
Try this week: pick one small thing you usually micromanage - a family dinner, a project, an email chain - and intentionally release it. Pray, hand it over, then do nothing more until the next sensible step arrives. Notice how your chest relaxes, how your sleep deepens, how decisions become clearer. Peace is not the absence of challenges; it’s the quiet confidence that whatever comes, God is at work - and that is worth far more than any earthly control.
