(Matthew 6:1–6) — warning against practising righteousness to be seen by others.
Part 4: RECURRING TACTICS THE TEMPTER USES — 3. Spiritual Pride (turning holiness into self-satisfaction or superiority)
Spiritual pride is when the pursuit of holiness twists inward, and it suddenly becomes all about you! Your image, your great ideas, your rightness, how much God is blessing you! ... It looks holy, but it’s actually quite hollow.
How does it happen? It does this by:
- Worshipping self (self‑validation): actions meant for God become ways to prove your worth to others (or even yourself).
- Measuring up: you compare yourself downwards instead of measuring against Christ.
- Settling identity: “I am righteous” replaces “I needed mercy and God ‘made me' righteous!”
- Performing for applause: prayer, fasting, service turn into trophies instead of worship.
- Hardening judgment: rules and fault‑finding replace a soft heart toward the hurting.
- Shutting out correction: praise cements the illusion, and so you just stop listening.
Signs you’ve been infected:
- You’re quicker to expose others’ faults than to name your own.
- You enjoy being seen as spiritual.
- You get defensive when challenged.
- Your compassion is thin.
Fight it like this:
- Be brutally honest with yourself about your motives... confess them quickly.
- Remember daily that you live by grace—not merit.
- Choose a hidden service over public praise.
- Surround yourself and stay answerable to people who will tell you the truth.
- Worship to reorient your heart to God, not to yourself.

Let us pray, "Heavenly Father, I see now that holiness without humility is just religion dressed up. Help me, Lord, to keep Grace at the forefront of everything You ask me to do, because I see now that’s where real holiness lives." Amen!
