Part 3: WE MAY LET GO... BUT GOD NEVER WILL — 9. Worship (Gathered response of praise and obedience that shapes and sends God’s people)
Isn’t it astonishing how the old Egyptian gods were treated like temperamental shopkeepers? If a harvest failed or a child fell ill, people would stop showing up at the shrine, stop giving sacrifices, and simply blame the deity for their misfortune. They expected a one‑sided exchange: my prayers and my offerings = your perpetual blessing. When life didn’t deliver on that bargain, they walked away — no questions, no turning back, just abandonment.
It sounds absurd to us — almost childish. Yet how easily that same bargain‑mentality creeps into our hearts. We whisper prayers, give what we can, and unconsciously expect God to keep our lives problem‑free in return. When grief, delay, or unanswered longings arrive, some of us tilt toward disappointment, even resentment, as if God has failed a contract!
Here’s the truth: the Living God doesn’t operate like a vending machine, and He doesn’t abandon us when life goes wrong. He loves, calls, and invites. He stays faithful long after the gods of convenience would have been abandoned. He draws near in suffering, not only in sunshine.
So resist the bargain‑mentality. Keep coming back. Keep worshipping. Call out honestly, bring your hurt, and let the long, patient faithfulness of God reshape your expectations. After all, we belong to One who redeems—not to a deity we can walk away from when life gets hard. Thank God for that.
