(Proverbs 10:9) “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.”
SERIES 8: BECOMING LIKE JESUS. 9. Living with integrity (Being the same person when no one is watching).
Following Jesus means learning to live with integrity. That means being the same person when people are watching and when nobody is watching. Integrity is about more than avoiding obvious wrongdoing. It is about allowing our private lives to match the person we appear to be in public.
It is easy to behave well when others are looking, because we naturally want people to think well of us. But what happens when there is nobody to impress, nobody to correct us and nobody who will ever know what we have done? That is where integrity is tested.
Jesus repeatedly challenged the difference between outward appearance and inward reality. He was not impressed by religious behaviour that looked good on the outside but concealed something very different within. God sees beyond appearances. He sees our motives, our choices and the things we do when no one else knows.
Integrity does not mean that we never make mistakes. We will fail. We will say the wrong thing, make poor choices and sometimes disappoint ourselves (and others). Integrity means being honest about those failures rather than hiding them. It means admitting when we are wrong, asking forgiveness and choosing to put things right.
There are small opportunities to practise integrity every day. Keeping a promise – when it becomes inconvenient. Telling the truth – when a lie would be easier. Returning something that does not belong to us – even when there’s no rush. In fact, doing the right thing when nobody would know if we didn’t. Treating people with the same respect whether they can help us or not.
Following Jesus means allowing our faith to shape every part of our lives — not just the parts other people can see.
The real test of character is not who we pretend to be, but who we are when nobody is looking.
Following Jesus means choosing what is right because it is right — even though nobody will ever know… but God does!
