SERIES 7: WALKING WITH JESUS - “How do I now live because I belong to Christ?” 28. Resting in God's grace (You are sustained by Grace from beginning to end).
Following Jesus does not mean living under the constant pressure of trying to prove ourselves worthy of His love. We follow Him because He first called us, He first loved us, and He then gave Himself for us.
There are times when we are tempted to keep striving—to achieve more, do better, and somehow prove that we are good enough. But the Christian life does not begin with our strength, and it certainly does not depend upon our strength to continue.
It begins with Grace.
We came to Jesus because of His grace, not because we had earned our place. We are forgiven by grace, sustained by grace, and carried through every season by grace. Even when our faith feels weak, His faithfulness remains strong.
Paul understood this when he pleaded with God to remove his “thorn in the flesh.” (see above).
Following Jesus means learning to rest in that grace. We do not have to pretend that we are strong when we are struggling. We do not have to carry every burden as though everything depends upon us. Nor should we be ashamed when we become weary.
Sometimes following Jesus just means continuing to walk - especially when we can’t see what’s ahead. Sometimes it means waiting, even when hell itself seems to be exploding all around us. And sometimes it means simply resting in the knowledge that God is holding us.
Grace does not mean that life will always be easy. It means that whatever we encounter, we do not encounter it alone. The same Jesus who called us is the One who sustains us. The same grace that brought us into His family will carry us all the way home.
So today, breathe. Lay down the burden of having to be enough. You are not sustained by your performance. You are sustained by grace. From beginning to end.
