SERIES 7: WALKING WITH JESUS - “How do I now live because I belong to Christ?” 26. Living with eternity in view (Today's choices echo into forever).
Following Jesus means learning to live with eternity in view. Why? Because it is easy to become so focused on today that we forget this life is not all there is. We think about our plans, our possessions, our problems and what other people think of us. Yet Jesus calls us to look beyond what is temporary and keep our eyes on what is eternal.
As the Apostle Paul wrote, living with eternity in view changes the way we make choices.
Instead of asking only, “What do I want?” we begin to ask, “What does God want?”
Instead of asking, “What will make me happy today?” we ask, “What will matter forever?”
That does not mean ignoring the life God has given us. We still work, love our families, make plans and enjoy His blessings. But we remember that everything we have here is temporary.
While we are here though, our choices matter.
Every act of kindness matters.
Every opportunity to forgive matters.
Every time we choose obedience instead of taking the easier path matters.
Every person we encourage matters.
We may never see the full consequences of our actions. A simple act of faithfulness today may influence someone's life for years to come. And some of the things we do for God may never be noticed by anyone except Him.
But He sees.
One day, we will look back on this life from the viewpoint of eternity, and many of the things that seem so important to us today will have disappeared completely.
So let us not live merely for what is temporary. Let's live for what lasts. Our time on earth is limited. Eternity is not. Keep your eyes on Christ, and let eternity shape the way you live today.
