Following Jesus does not mean temptation disappears; it means we no longer have to face it alone. Every follower of Jesus will face temptation. What changes is where we turn to when it comes...
Scripture clearly shows us that Jesus Himself was tempted. That He understands our weaknesses, our struggles and the pressures we face. That He did not overcome temptation by relying on His own human strength, but by remaining completely dependent upon His Father and grounded in God’s Word.
We often make the mistake of thinking that victory over temptation means simply trying harder. But willpower alone will fail us - True victory begins when we recognise our dependence upon Christ.
When temptation comes, we have a choice. We can entertain it, allow our thoughts to dwell on it and gradually move towards it—or we can turn to Jesus immediately.
Sometimes the wisest response is simply to walk away. We do not have to prove how strong we are by standing close to something that is tempting us. Jesus calls us to be wise, to recognise our weaknesses and to depend upon Him.
Prayer is one of our greatest weapons. When we bring temptation to God rather than trying to hide it, we invite His strength into our weakness. And if/when we do fall, we must not allow shame to convince us that we cannot return to God. We confess, receive His forgiveness and get back up. Our failures do not change Christ’s faithfulness.
Victory grows through dependence upon Christ. We do not overcome temptation because we are strong enough. We overcome as we learn to remain close to the One who is.
