SERIES 7: WALKING WITH JESUS - “How do I now live because I belong to Christ?” 18. Being generous (Open hands reveal a trusting heart).
Following Jesus changes the way we think about what we have. Instead of holding tightly to our money, possessions and time, we begin to see them as gifts that God has entrusted to us.
Jesus taught, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). Generosity is not simply about giving money. We can be generous with our time, our attention, our skills, our encouragement and our compassion.
Sometimes we think we need to have plenty before we can be generous. But generosity has little to do with how much we have and much more to do with the attitude of our hearts.
When we give, we are also learning to trust God. We can easily succumb to the world’s temptations and become anxious about having enough, especially when money seems tight or the future uncertain. An open hand says, “God, everything I have ultimately comes from You, and I trust You to provide what I need.”
Christian generosity should never be forced or used to impress others. It should flow naturally from a heart full of gratitude.
Generosity also changes the people around us. A meal shared, a bill quietly paid, a listening ear given to someone who is lonely, or practical help offered to a struggling neighbour can all become ways of showing God's love.
We don't have to wait for a dramatic opportunity. We can start with whatever God has already placed in our hands.
Ask yourself: Am I holding tightly to what I have, or am I willing to share it with others?
Give freely. Share gladly. Trust God with what you have, and let your generosity become a quiet reflection of His generosity towards you.
