(Galatians 2:20) (“I have been crucified with Christ… the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God.”)

Part 6: WHAT’S IN IT FOR US? - 4. Greater courage (trust in God lets you risk sacrificial love).

Courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s the choice to move toward love despite it.

When you trust God’s goodness, you stop sizing up every relationship with a risk assessment and begin treating people as investments of Grace. Risking sacrificial love looks messy and vulnerable, but it also births depth that polite distance never will.

Trust loosens the grip of self-protection: If you’re always guarding your emotions, time and reputation, you’ll never be the kind of person who bears another’s shame or carries someone through a night of grief. But when you believe God holds you - your reputation, your resources, your future - you can step into hard conversations, offer care that costs, and stay around, even when others walk away.

Sacrificial love is practical: It might mean going in when everyone else is leaving, paying for a struggling neighbour’s groceries, sitting in silence with someone who’s lost their faith, or forgiving an insult that still really stings. These acts aren’t dramatic only; they’re routine, faithful refusals to choose comfort over compassion. Over time they teach your heart to trust God more than your fears.

Courage also requires wisdom and limits. Risk isn't recklessness; my wife will often tell me that sacrificial love sometimes means setting limits - saying "no" now so you can say "yes" where it truly matters. Boundaries and bravery belong together: both aim to sustain long-term faithfulness, not short-term martyrdom.

When a community practices this courage, walls come down. People learn they can fail and still be received, hurt and be healed, ask and be helped. That kind of belonging fuels further risk-taking - people give more of themselves because they’ve been given to.

Try this week: choose one risky, loving thing you can do that costs you time, comfort, or pride - call someone you’ve avoided, sit with a friend’s pain without trying to fix it, or offer concrete help to a family under strain. Do it twice. Notice how your trust shifts, even if your fear stays for a while. Courage grows in repeats, and sacrificial love becomes the language of a people shaped by Grace.
