(Matthew 26:41) “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Part 2: THINGS THAT TRIP UP CHRISTIANS — 8. Consumerism / materialism (when chasing stuff, status or comfort slowly crowds out devotion and generosity)

We rarely wake up wanting to be greedy. It slips in as one more purchase, one more upgrade, or a quiet measuring of our worth by what we own. Before long, our time, attention and money orbit comfort and image more than Christ.

'Stuff' promises satisfaction but only feeds a cycle of more wanting—making faith feel practical only where it doesn’t cost us. The gospel becomes an add‑on to a good life rather than the centre of it.

Left unchecked, consumerism hardens the heart, dulls compassion, and makes us poor witnesses to a world hungry for what only Jesus gives. It also robs the local church of generosity and missional risk.

Caution: Don’t let habits of spending and comparison decide your priorities. Notice what you’re serving and cut what competes with devotion to Christ.

Practical steps:

- Name the idols — admit where comfort, status or stuff have taken priority. (Colossians 3:5; Matthew 6:21)

- Simplify your spending — set a budget that reflects gospel priorities and reduces impulse buying. (Proverbs 21:20; Luke 14:28)

- Practice generous living — give regularly, sacrificially and cheerfully to grow trust in God’s provision. (2 Corinthians 9:6–7; Acts 20:35)

- Reorder rhythms — prioritise people, rest and ministry over consumption and recreation. (Mark 8:36; Hebrews 13:16)

- Escape comparison traps — limit social media or advertising that fuels envy and discontent. (Philippians 4:11–13)

- Cultivate gratitude — keep a simple habit of giving thanks for daily provision. (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

- Test purchases by mission — ask whether this spending helps or hinders your witness and service. (Matthew 6:33; Luke 12:34)

Let’s pray, "Heavenly Father, is this me? If it is, then please forgive me for valuing things above you. Help me live with less, give more, and keep my heart where your treasure is. Make me generous, content and faithful so my life points others to you." Amen!
