(Mark 6:31) The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.”

Part 2: THINGS THAT TRIP UP CHRISTIANS — 9. Burnout / ministry overload (when relentless giving, poor limits or the pressure to perform leave you exhausted, resentful and spiritually drained)

Understanding the balance between "Letting go - and letting God..." can be incredibly difficult. We often step into too much good work and forget THAT IT'S GOD'S JOB TO CARRY IT. It begins with noble motives: a desire to help, to lead well, to make a difference. But without rest, clear limits and dependence on the Holy Spirit, service becomes nothing more than grinding toil rather than joyful service. Mornings that once felt joyful turn heavy, patience thins, prayer dries up, and faith feels like an extra task on an already full to‑do checklist. Burnout saps spiritual life and makes ministry seem harmful rather than healing.

Unchecked, overload damages relationships, blunts calling, and can drive people out of service or faith altogether. Leaders who never pause model unsustainable Christianity; volunteers who are worn out stop showing up. The Gospel’s message is sustained by peaceful, loving rhythms, not ceaseless hustle.

Caution: Don’t pride yourself on being indispensable. Pushing through without replenishment only leads to cynicism, collapse and sin. Pause and commune with the Holy Spirit before you choose; He will help you withdraw, be replenished, and stand on His Grace rather than your own strength.

Practical steps:

- Name the strain — admit where you’re overcommitted or running on fumes. (Psalm 62:1–2; Matthew 11:28)

- Protect Sabbath and rest — build regular rest into your week and holidays into your year. (Exodus 20:8–11; Mark 6:31)

- Set healthy limits — clarify what you will and won’t do; delegate and share responsibility. (Galatians 6:5–9)

- Re‑establish rhythms of dependence — prioritise prayer, Scripture and spiritual direction over activity. (Luke 5:16; Psalm 119:105)

- Practice margin — leave space in your diary so unexpected needs don’t become constant pressure. (Proverbs 16:32)

- Get honest support — talk with a pastor, mentor, coach or trusted friend about workload and emotional health. (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10; James 5:16)

- Return to gospel motivation — remind yourself ministry is service, not scorekeeping; your identity rests in Christ, not in productivity. (Colossians 3:23–24; 2 Corinthians 4:16–18)

Let’s pray, "Heavenly Father, is this me? If it is, then please forgive me for making ministry all about my performance. Help me rest in you, set wise limits, and serve from a renewed heart. Restore my passion for you and for people, that I might persevere through your Grace instead of mere willpower." Amen!
