Part 2: THINGS THAT TRIP UP CHRISTIANS — 2. Legasism (Mistaking rules for righteousness—and missing Grace.)
Basically, legalism trips Christians because it replaces Grace with rule-keeping. When people elevate rules, traditions, or rigid standards above the Gospel—focusing on what to do rather than what Christ has done—they weaken Grace’s freeing influence and transforming power.
Legalism strips faith of its soul, reducing it to a cold checklist that cultivates smug, performative religiosity. It brutalises those who are struggling—measuring maturity by outward compliance rather than by humble dependence on Christ and the Spirit’s inward transformation.
Take heed: legalism chokes spiritual life and drives people away.
When Christianity is reduced to rules, newcomers and the hurting hear judgment instead of mercy; the legalist hardens their heart and dies inwardly, banking on their own form of religious obedience instead of resting in Christ’s finished work.
Practical steps: Remind yourself of the Gospel truths—you were saved by Grace through faith (Eph. 2:8–9), not by works! Replace rule-counting with dependence on the Holy Spirit: confess a performance mindset, repent of judgmentalism, deepen Bible-rooted understanding of justification and sanctification, seek a Gospel-centred community, and practice mercy and humility as expressions of Christ’s Grace to YOU.
