(Ephesians 4:32) “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
SERIES 8: BECOMING LIKE JESUS. 5. Forgiving like Jesus (Releasing the debt we think others owe us).
Forgiveness does not mean saying that what happened was acceptable, removing appropriate boundaries, or pretending that nothing happened. It means refusing to remain tied to the offence by surrendering our desire to make the other person pay.
Forgiveness sets the other person free from the debt we have been keeping — but it also sets us free from carrying it!
Paul writes, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32).
That changes the question from “How can ‘they' make this right?” to, “How can ‘I' release this into God’s hands?”
I read somewhere that forgiveness is a decision we make from our heart long before our feelings catch up, and we may have to make that decision more than once as the memory returns. But each time, we can choose to release the debt again.
Jesus forgave us when we had nothing with which to repay Him and following Jesus means allowing that same grace to flow through us.
