(Matthew 20:26) “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

SERIES 8: BECOMING LIKE JESUS. 4. Serving like Jesus (Greatness through serving others).

Following Jesus means learning that true greatness is not measured by position, influence or recognition. It is measured by our willingness to serve.

Jesus turned the world's idea of greatness upside down. His disciples even wondered who among them was the greatest, but Jesus pointed them towards a very different kind of greatness. He did not tell them to seek power over others. He showed them how to place themselves at the service of others so that God would be pleased.

Jesus Himself was the perfect example. He welcomed the overlooked, touched the untouchable, listened to those others ignored and gave His time to people who could offer Him nothing in return. He did not serve because He needed their approval. He served because He loved them, and that same attitude is what He asks of us.

Serving does not always mean doing something dramatic. Often it means noticing what needs to be done and quietly doing it. It can mean giving your time when you are busy, listening when you would rather speak, helping someone who cannot repay you, or putting another person's needs before your own convenience.

Often the greatest opportunities to serve are the ones nobody notices.

There is a particular freedom in serving without needing recognition. When we stop asking, “What will 'I' get from this?”and begin asking instead, “How can I help?” something changes within us - our attention moves away from ourselves and towards the people God has placed around us.

Following Jesus means learning to measure greatness differently.

The servant may not receive applause. The work may go unnoticed. But when we serve with love, humility and no demand for recognition, we begin to look a little more like Him and people take notice.
