SERIES 7: WALKING WITH JESUS - “How do I now live because I belong to Christ?” 14. Living honestly (Integrity honours Christ even when no one is watching).
Following Jesus helps us to behave well, even when other people are looking. We naturally want others to think well of us, so we can be careful about what we say, how we act, and even how we present ourselves. But Christian integrity goes much deeper than our public image. It asks a more searching question: Who am I when nobody's looking?
God sees what others cannot. He sees our motives, our private decisions, our thoughts, our conversations and the things we choose to hide. Nothing is hidden from Him.
Jesus taught His followers not merely to appear righteous before others, but to live sincerely before God. Our faith should not be a performance. What people see on the outside should reflect what is genuinely happening on the inside.
Living honestly means telling the truth even when a lie would be easier. It means admitting when we are wrong rather than protecting our pride. It means keeping our promises, treating people fairly, refusing to take advantage of situations, and doing the right thing even when there is no reward for doing so.
Integrity also means being the same person in private as we are in public.
We will not always get this right. Christians still make mistakes, sometimes deliberately. But when we recognise that we have acted dishonestly, we don't need to hide from God. We can confess our failure, ask for forgiveness, put things right where possible, and begin again.
Our integrity does not earn God's love. Rather, because we belong to Christ, we want our lives to reflect Him.
