(Colossians 4:6) “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”

SERIES 7: WALKING WITH JESUS - “How do I now live because I belong to Christ?” 13. Speaking with Grace (Words become tools for healing instead of hurting).

Following Jesus changes not only what we believe, but also how we speak.

Our words are powerful. They can encourage or discourage, comfort or wound, build someone up or tear them down. Sometimes a few careless words can stay with someone for years. Yet a simple word of kindness at the right moment can give someone the strength to keep going.

The Bible says, “The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.” (Proverbs 15:4)

Speaking with grace doesn't mean avoiding difficult conversations or pretending that wrong is right. Jesus never avoided truth. But there is a difference between speaking the truth to help someone and speaking the truth simply to hurt them.

Before we speak, it is worth asking: Is what I'm about to say true? Is it necessary? Will it help?

We don't need to win every argument. We don't need to have the last word. And we don't need to say everything we are thinking simply because we are thinking it.

James tells us, “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” (James 1:19)

That can be difficult. Our natural response is often to defend ourselves, explain ourselves or respond immediately. But following Jesus means learning to listen before speaking and choosing our words carefully.

Sometimes the most Christlike words are surprisingly simple:

“I'm sorry.”

“I was wrong.”

“I understand.”

“How can I help?”

“I'm praying for you.”

And sometimes the most Christlike thing we can do is to say nothing at all.

So ask yourself today: Do my words sound like someone who belongs to Jesus?

(Great Quote) Words can wound. But in the hands of someone following Jesus, words can also become tools for healing.
