(Mark 10:45) “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Part 6: WHAT’S IN IT FOR US? - 7. Purpose now (serving others turns aimless days into meaningful action).

I’m sure you've heard it preached that purpose is not just a trophy to be won at the end of life!

Purpose is the daily act of laying down our little agendas to join God’s work in the world. When we look inwards and chase significance for ourselves, we grow weary and hollow; but when we turn outward, even small acts acquire eternal weight. Serving others reorients restless hearts and turns routine moments into sacramental opportunities.

Begin simply: ask God to show you one person or one need today. Let prayer sharpen your vision: “Lord, who do You want me to help today?” Then move with whatever courage you have. Purpose is built by faithful smallness, not heroic leaps. A smile, a listening ear, a meal, an honest compliment - these are the currency of a life that matters.

Serve with humility: seek usefulness, not applause. The posture of Jesus was always the under‑servant - hands that washed feet, life shared, even given away. Resist the temptation to keep a tally of how you serve; let God be the accountant. At the same time, protect your capacity: when you’re depleted and serving on fumes, you burn out. Prioritise sustainable rhythms - Sabbath, prayer, honest yeses and noes, so your service is generous - not resentful.

Make service practical: Look for predictable, repeatable ways to help: volunteer somewhere once a month, mentor someone for a few minutes a week, bring groceries to a neighbour on a set day. Pair prayer with action: before you step out, ask for courage and for the name of one tangible thing you can do. Teach your hands to respond quickly to small needs.

Watch how serving reshapes you: your schedule gains meaning, your concerns widen beyond yourself, and your heart learns gratitude in the exchange of giving and receiving. Relationships deepen when you show up reliably; communities heal when many small acts add together.

Try this week: identify one predictable need in your circle (a neighbour, coworker, family member, or local ministry). Choose one concrete, repeatable act you can do for four weeks - deliver a meal, offer a ride, send a consistent text of encouragement - and commit to it. Begin with prayer, do the work without announcing it, then notice how your days take on a clearer, quieter purpose.

Let us pray, "Heavenly Father, I remember all this... how did I ever move from serving others with joy to just serving myself in bitterness? Help me find my way back to serving You, Lord." Amen!
