Part 5: THE MAGNIFICENCE OF GOD AND HIS DEITY - 12. The Incarnation and Deity of Christ (God with us; why Jesus’ Divine identity matters for salvation and worship).
There is a holy nearness here that both astonishes and restores: God stepped into our story, taking on flesh so that we might be known, healed, and rescued. The Incarnation - God with us - is not a theological ornament but the very hinge of salvation and the heart of worship (John 1:14; Matthew 1:23).
God Who Became Flesh: When the eternal Word became man, Divinity did not dilute humanity, nor did humanity swallow divinity. Jesus is fully God and fully human - able to bridge the infinite gulf between God and us. This matters because only One who is truly God could bear the weight of our sin; only One who is truly human could stand in our place. The cross makes sense only in the light of the Incarnation: the God who saves is the God who suffered for us (Philippians 2:5–11; Hebrews 2:14–18).
Why Jesus’ Divine Identity Matters for Salvation: If Jesus were merely a good teacher or a moral exemplar, his death could at best inspire, not atone. But because he is the Divine Substitute, his life, death, and resurrection accomplish real reconciliation - defeating sin, death, and the powers of darkness. His resurrection vindicates his Divine claim and secures our justification and new life (Romans 1:4; 1 Corinthians 15:3–4).
Why the Incarnation Matters for Worship: Worship is not primarily about ideas but about Person. We worship because God has come near in Christ. Seeing Jesus as God compels awe, trust, and total devotion - not as a distant deity but as a loving Saviour who knows our weakness yet encourages and champions our hope. To deny his Deity is to shrink the Gospel; to embrace it is to enter into wonder. Practical ways to live in light of the Incarnation:
- Read the Gospels slowly, imagining God with you in the scenes.
- Let Jesus’ sympathy shape your prayers: confess with honesty, receive comfort with humility.
- Serve others knowing God has identified with the poor, the lonely, the broken.
Try this: this week, at the start of each day, pray: “Lord Jesus, make your presence known to me today.” Notice one moment when you feel seen or helped and thank him.
