(1 Timothy 6:6–10,17–19; Luke 12:15–21 — "Guard against love of money and selfish accumulation."

This series explores how God speaks to us. Part 20: Finances (Lack & Abundance) — managing your finances from a position of leadership, not subservience.

EMOTIONAL TRIGGERS - When you’re stressed (or bored), your thinking shifts—future plans blur, impulse control takes over, and it becomes much harder to follow the monthly budget you know you have to live by! Retail therapy feels good while you're spending money—but actually locks you into a cycle that worsens debt.

At times like these, you’re far more likely to impulse-buy, make snap money decisions—or avoid them altogether; that just leads to missed bills and pushes you further down the debt hole!

Swap shopping for better mood fixes—Take a walk and pray. Call a friend and ask them to pray with you... Aim to build a small buffer (£500–£2,000) so unexpected bills don’t throw you off. Break big money goals into tiny steps so you get wins without the stress. Prioritise self-control through prayer, sleep and exercise, or speak to your Church leader about financial counselling if it’s all feeling too heavy.

NB - This morning, I was reminded that sometimes, because of poor health, you can no longer work full-time but still need to keep a roof over your head, run a car to look for employment, and feed your family. In those moments, God’s loving care and promises become real—He is our great Provider. We’ll discuss this further later. In the meantime, remember how God frees us from these — and any — chains! James 4:3 warns that selfish motives can keep prayers from being answered. God wants to heal our responses to temptation and our recurring negative tendencies; we cannot expect Him to free us from one crippling debt only for us to breathe a sigh of relief and then fall into another!

Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father, thank You that true gain is godliness with contentment. Guard our hearts from the love of money and the deceit of wealth. Deliver us from greed, from hoarding, and from trusting in earthly treasures that rot and fail. Give us wisdom to count the cost, to steward well what You’ve entrusted to us, and to live generously for Your kingdom. Help us to be rich toward You—storing up treasures in heaven by acts of mercy, justice, and love. Keep us humble, free us from anxious planning that forgets You, and shape us into cheerful, faithful stewards who honour You in all we do." Amen!
